Mosque Visit - 20/11/2024

Year 5 enjoyed their visit to the Ponders End Mosque this week;  the children were able to walk around the Mosque and identify different features.  They also listened to the Imam teach them about the five pillars of Islam and explain how Muslims practice their religion. They were fascinated to learn how the dome is used to project the Imam's voice and circulate cool air around the room!

Garlic Planting

Year 5 have been planting garlic on the school's allotment as part of their learning in science. Garlic reproduces asexually, which means there is only one parent plant, and it creates a clone of itself.

STEM workshop

"We learnt all about civil engineers; at secondary school you need to study hard at maths, science and art and design to be good at engineering." - Nikodem

"We did a workshop all about civil engineering. Those are the people who design and build things like houses and bridges. The civil engineers we met are trying to make buildings more eco-friendly." - Lois

Forces

While studying forces, Year 5 have been investigating the effects of air resistance. We tried different sized parachutes to see which one took the longest to fall to the ground and therefore air resistance had the greatest effect. Have a look at our videos.

Little Investigators

"We learnt about the build environment and looked at different landmarks in our area. I enjoyed being creative and learning how to build the 3D structures." - Yuliyan 5B

Geography

In Geography, we have been learning about how people can reduce the chance of a drought in California.  We learnt about California's climate and how drought has affected people there. We also learnt about how the water supply has been improved through the use of reservoirs and aqueducts to enable water to be transported from the north (where there is more rainfall) to the south (where it is needed by farmers).

Mosque Visit

Year 5 had an amazing morning, visiting the Ponders end Mosque. The children were ready with all their questions about Islam.  It was a pleasure to watch the children show such respect in the Mosque and to the Imam.

DT - Break Making

As part of our D&T topic this half-term, Year 5 have been making bread. They had lots of fun making the dough, waiting for it to prove, knocking it back, then waiting for the fabulous results once their bread rolls were baked. Download the recipe below for easy step-by-step instructions for something you could also make at home.
