PSHE
Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education
At Galliard Primary School we enable children to become confident, capable and caring individuals with a knowledge and understanding of the value systems found in Britain. We teach them to have respect for other peoples’ views, to celebrate the diversity in society and gain an understanding of sex and relationships at an age-appropriate level.
In order to do this, we follow the advice and curriculum from the PSHE Association, the national body on the subject. Our focus is on active, discussion-based learning in PSHE to provide children with the opportunity to rehearse the key skills for life. The scheme of work covers all the required objectives and follows the three core areas of Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World. Each year group follows the same key themes which are broken down further into 3 sub categories. Each year these themes are approached through more complex concepts while still linking back to their prior learning. This model constantly reinforces prior learning each year and moves the children on in these key aspects of PSHE.
Our aim is for all children to leave Galliard being able to reflect on their own experiences and to develop a personal response to the fundamental questions of life and understand the importance of physical activity and diet for leading a healthy lifestyle. In addition, we want the pupils to feel empowered to manage their mental health, developing their self–esteem and the ability to express their own views and feelings.
